Grew up in a very small town in very small NE Montana. Out of high school I did go college in Montana thinking I would become a teacher. I was having too much fun at college so the grades weren’t very good.

One of my girlfriends moved on before me to Seattle to attend Business School. She called and wanted me to come to school there. I really didn’t have any interest in Business School. Chose a different school Automation Institute, she said it had something to do about computers. That sounded interesting. Packed my bags and moved to Seattle (pretty adventurist, never had been there before) and moved in with 3 gals.

School was downtown. I could take the bus, but it was close enough to walk. (My is was in good shape back then), I lived on capitol hill. Have you ever seen the hills in Seattle? I wish I had half of that stamina now. I have become an older retired widow.

Here I was starting in Technology and I didn’t even know (blind luck). It brought me a fantastic career. When I finished ATT, it was time to get a job. My first try was trying to find a computer programing job. That was hard. Of course those places that did have computers, this is 1968 did want someone with experience.

Next option was to find a job as a keypunch operator. Starting working part time keypunch working for a company that kept track of railroad train cards.

My first full time job was at Harborview Hospital. Harborview Hospital is sold to and the University of Washington Hospitals.. Then we began doing the work with both hospitals. My beginning computers were a large difference comparison to what we see today. I am going to explain to you what my computer (technology) looked like. A history of computers to many of you. I started with larger floor model computers that didn’t make many brains. start

• All data punched into card
• All cards are verified for accuracy by a 2nd keypunch operator
• All Data cards loaded into computer storage

Card handling is a very long tedious manual.

The volume of cards was very large, because we were working with 2 Hospitals.

I know this is probably boring, but it shows how we got to where we are. These machines become the 2nd step of my computer career. Now what about the computer (IBM 1400 series). There are big long shutes on the computer that allowed you to load a large stack of cards (Think about it we are loading the invoices for every patient in each hospital.

Disk Drives/Storage

This particular computer had 4 drive drives. Disks were removable from each drive.

Print invoices after completed program. .

The printer, was very fast; however this can take hours. How long you ask? it could take 3 shifts – 8hours each.

Be Safe-Back up the Data

Back up the disks are created and copied it all onto tape (this will take another shift).

Precise handling of handling of labeling and storage rotation of all Disk and Tapes. available.

I Loved working as a computer operator, it was really fun.

Then a problem/not really happened: Doxies Mom Falls in love with her boss. It was against policy for me to keep working for him if we got married. We did get married, but I found another job working for the UofW, but I would be working nights. I began as a shift supervisor at University of Washington on campus. I would now be working on grades. But I worked Nights!!!!

Good and Bad happened

I worked nights for about a year, then I started to look for another job. So I am out pounding the pavement. I am not going to bore you with every job I had.

I moved on to becoming an IT Manager at multiple smaller places. When Both my husband & I moved forward we decided to find better employment that will provide us better benefits. We both did. He ended up at Boeing, I moved to Weyerhaeuser (WRECO).

Doxies Mom retirement came sooner than expected due than some health problems. My husband passed away in 2011. I will admit I have never been a frugal person and it has been a challenge to live with my one income.
