Valentine Day Research

Valentine day started started in 2 different centuries however both of the men who are recognized as a part of the forklore of Valentine Day and finally were later considered martyrs.

Research on Valentine Day:

  • The holiday has origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February. The festival, which celebrated the coming of spring, included fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery. Pope Gelasius later renamed Lupercalia to St. Valentine’s Day.  (Really there’s’ more than that to it, but I will spare you the details because it is kind of sick-o)
  • Saint Valentine of Terni, married young couples against the Emperors orders.
  • Lupercalia and Saint Valentine of Terni were executed on February 14.
  • Saint Valentine was beheaded after he sent a farewell note, “From your Valentine” to his Honey.
  • Other tidbits about Valentine Daye
    • The Rose is the language of flowers after Greek Goddess Aphrodite by King Charles II of Sweden (17th Century)
    • 19th century, thanks to the industrial revolution and the invention of the printing press, Esther A. Howland (known as “Mother of the Valentine”) began selling the first mass-produced cards in America in the 1840s and Hallmark Cards entered the scene in 1913.
    • In Finland February 14 is Friend Day
    • Cupid is the symbol of valentines.  Cupid was the son of Venus.  Venus is Roman God of Love and Beauty
    • 1537, England King Henry VII Officially declared February 14, Valentines Day
    • Pope Gelasius declared February 14, St. Valentine’s Day around 498 A.D.
