My Love For Pet

My love for Pet has been me since I grew up. They were my confidant, my best friends, and thought of as my family.

How I remember Poplar when I grew up

Poplar is located in the very right NE corner of Montana. It is approximately 75 miles from North Dakota and 100 miles from Canada. It is located on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation where the the where the head of the tribal quarters (sioux and assiniboine indian nations)are located.

  • Corbins drugstore that we went to regularly, because mom went to school with Patty Corbin
  • Boulds drugstore which even had a soda fountain in the back of the store
  • 2 clothing stores (The Federation and Fort Peck Mercantile)
  • Bills Bakery and Cafe (Wow what a bakery). Every table had it’s own little jukebox. Of course if you were looking for someone, you would look there first there since that was the hangout.
  • The Fort Peck Theatre It wasn’t very big, but I remeber when they put in a CinemaScope screen. I don’t know when the theatre was first built, but it still had the orchestra pit, so my parents had been going to it for years.
  • Chief Drive In Outdoor Theatre – It was located about a mile south of town.
  • Tastee Freeze, that was later expanded to a KFC (we were really going big time)

For Real

Poplar Grade/High School
High School Poplar, MT
  • Grade school building (I attended part of Grade school in (1st grade), my mother attended high school in, my brother attended high school (just a tidbit up to my mom’s graduation of 33 that was the biggest high school class, mine was 31, the class after mine beat hers with 34. I bet they aren’t any bigger now)
  • New high School – I was the first class graduation
  • Traders State Bank – Later years my parents and other farmers joined together and bought
  • Beauty Shop
  • At some type of Farm Equipment Dealer (probably John Deer)
  • Farmers Union Dealer
  • Chevy Dealer
  • Legion Club
  • There were Quite a few different churches

Let me tell you where I lived

I grew in a small town in NE Montana. At that time it was just like the little picturesque people imagine. We lived in a a nice 3 bedroom home with a lovely backyard and front yard. The backyard had this beautiful old tree that big limbs that were sturdy enough to climb up, in fact I think at one time I think it had a swing on one. Mom always had beautiful flowers planted around the house. Also remember the huge lilac trees. Didn’t have all of the beautiful flowering bushes like we do in Seattle.

Poplar Water Tower

We lived on the street where the water tower was located. You know one of those big ones with the city name on it. Most All the small towns in Montana have a water tower because we are drinking off of wells.

My First Love for Pet

The first pet I can remember is our family dog. He was a red cocker spaniel I called Boy. I say I called Boy, because Mom said his real name was Duffy, but I couldn’t say that so I called him Boy. Of course everybody else called him that too. I have a picture right here with my dad & my brother just above my monitor. I have a slight memory of losing him, I think he was pretty old when he passed away but it was a very traumatic experience for me. Probably my first loss when I was little.

Love for Pet continues as I was young

I had many pets when I was young. There were horses, dogs, cats, rabbits, no nothing exotic.. Thank God my parents were pet people. My mother was very much a cat person, however she did bring home dogs.

One of the dogs I’ll always remember is Jeff. Jeff was a Bassett Hound. We got him when he was a pup, I remember how cute he was, when he walked he stepped on his long ears. We also had to pin his ears up while he ate because they would drag in his food. He was so much fun!

Oh I would get bunnies, but they weren’t pets. Which you might have guessed, my dad was a farmer when I was young my job was to help with the lunch boxes. I would help make the lunches and make sure they were packed every night for next. Then when Dad & Tom came home I was to empty the lunch boxes and make sure they were clean. Every once awhile I would open dad’s lunch pale and a bunny would jump out.

We’ll just have a sleep over

Then we would have to catch it and make a really nice place for it to sleep for a night or two, but then dad would take it back out into the country and let it ago. He taught me that such a wild animal like that wouldn’t be happy being a pet and I wouldn’t like seeing it sad. So I wasn’t sad when he took back to the country and let it go again so it could be happy.

Cowgirl? Kinda!

Yes, I loved riding horses. My dad was a cowboy, he had always rode horses in fact when he grew up he rode a horse to go to school. He and his siblings lived out in the country. We would go to different ranches where dad would help out when it was time for branding. He was always helping someone out.

After I started to ride horses we would go out on trail rides. There would be a bunch of different families then we’d have a big picnic. My I had forgotten about what fun we had has kids we were swimming in the creek.

Then I got braver and went to rodeos with dad (really they were called fun frantics). Barrel Racing and Pole Bending were my events. Don’t know that I ever won, but that’s okay we gave it a really good try. Black Beauty was a quarter horse and arabian she was a very nice horse. Once in awhile I would ride dads horse. He was a fun horse to ride, he had a really easy gate his name was name was Charcoal and was a Bull Dog Quarter horse.

We had 2 cats that were gorgeous, the were long haired siamese. Kim & Meph, i loved loved those pets so much.

Then a love for pet, Duke he was kinda between a pony and dog. He was a Great Dane. He was white with Blue eyes. The problem because he had the gene that made him white, also made him prone to cancer. So Sad!

No Pets??

There was a short period time I didn’t have any pets and I certainly did miss them. It was after high school, during college, when I moved from Montana to Seattle. There were a number of years I was living with 3 other girls and of course we were renting is not conducive to having pets. When I met my future husband, that is one of the things that was on the top of my list. Not to have children, but to have pets. He agreed (of course we agreed on more than that, We were in Love!!

Sharing My Love Of Pets

We couldn’t get a pet right away because we were living in an apartment, but we knew when we bought a house we could think about it. We were surprised it didn’t take us that long for us to go out and buy a house and the one we chose had a nice big back yard.

Move in is completed, preparation needed

It is time to think about having a pet, we both decided we would like to have a dog and probably a larger one. We have a big back yard so it would be perfect for a large dog. One thing, a fence is needed! Bud gets to work building a fence. Like I said it was a Large back yard. so it wasn’t just a one weekend job. But Bud got the job done quickly considering the size and he also added a small deck off the kitchen while he was at it. We figured that would cut down on the dirt coming in the house, especially as we wait for the grass to grow in the back.

Is it time

We think we are ready to add to our Family (Love of Pets means Family to me) and we knew it would be a dog. The only way would get a pet is to go the Humane Society, they are there waiting for us to adopt them. Bud decides will go there and may be I shouldn’t go, because if I go we might end up with a herd of dogs instead of dogs.

l

It happens, (just the beginning of almost 40 years together with our Family of pets)

Bud makes his trip to the Seattle Humane Society and brings our first dog. He is young (not a pup), very handsome boy a mix of German Shepard & not sure. Very sweet temperament and definitely still a puppy, full energy and curiosity. We can’t just call him dog, so we start going through what to name him. Finally comes up with Brandy, because he is close to that color (did not know that this has started something, you’ll see). Needless to say we both madly fell in love with him and enjoyed every moment being with him even though when we weren’t looking there were some things that got torn up that we really didn’t want that way.

Everyone knows that a dog gets lonely and is better off with another dog to keep him company. I looked it up, it was a couple years later (I have a list of our Family) Off Bud goes to the Humane Society again, now Brandy won’t get lonely. We have a very large black pup almost a small St Bernard, she was named Bourbon (not just because she was black, but maybe there is a theme starting here?)

History of My Love of Pets

I obviously can’t give you every detail about everyone of my Family, I think you would get to bored and as much as I loved each one of them I couldn’t remember every detail about each one of them over a period about 40 years. All I know I Loved each one of them and each of them brought something special to my life. And I look back there were a lot of tears shed when I lost each one of them.

Instead I will mention each one of them and mention something about each. I will be shedding tears as I do this, but many of the tears a ones of happiness for remembering what they each brought me. I hope you enjoy! This will kind of chronological order, I think. This is Our Family (Bud & I)

My (Our) Love of cats

  • Daiquiri & Mai Tai were my first cats. they very beautiful black cats and we got as kittens. Daiquiri lived with us for 20 years (never thought of it, 1/2 of our marriage life). We gave her a good life and she gave us a better.
  • Fogcutter, he was a cat to remember. His name was also his color, he was a big ole long haired cat with a lot of personality.
  • Kaluha arrived as a black male kitten, so cute
  • Smith & Currans (1 cat) was another black cat. We loved our black cats, I guess after we had Daiquiri for 20 years we were spoiled.

Play Doctor

  • Gimlet, he was our FAT cat and came with it was diabetes. There was no way I could get him to lose weight. His diabetes was so bad that we had to give him a shot everyday. He was so good about it. In fact he would lay there and purrrr-rrr-rrr, so such a sweet cat, He also had a kinda bum leg so when he walked he limped. Just loved him all that more.
  • Zinfandel, another very loving black female cat
  • Cosmo, gave her to me for Christmas one year. She was part siamese, she had the cutest face you’d ever see, because of the marking on her her face.
  • Contreau, the final of the black cats.
  • Seagrams, this is the only time I ever went to the Humane Society. I have to tell you why. Before Seagrams, Bud had brought home a black cat. Is the first time we ever had any problem adopting a new family member. She seemed to be a little spooky which concerned us, so to try and keep her feel safe we put her in the bathroom with all of her things. Later I went to check on her and she was not in there. She had flipped up the vent in the bathroom and went down into the duct work under the house. Poor Bud he was under the house, which is basically a crawalspace and he was trying to figure out where this cat is. He’s basically tearing the ductwork apart as he thinks he hears her. We finally have to call someone to help us. They put a live trap down there and put cat food down there. They were right eventually the cat did come out to eat and did get trapped. My that was a horrible 2 days.

It all turns out

  • We felt so terrible to but we had to take her back to the Humane Society. It broke my heart to do it, but it is a no kill society. I told Bud I would go with him. While we were there we picked up Seagrams, who wasn’t black. Seagrams was a Senior that had to be given up, he was 7 years old. He was a very good old cat and he fit in great with the family. He even loved the dogs.

My (Our) Love of Dogs

As I noted earlier we started off with a Brandy and Bourbon.

A happy Family

As our family rotated we always seemed to have a very happy family. We may have an occasional hiss or bark, but nothing to worry about in fact I have a lot of pictures of dogs and cats sleeping together.

Now what Dog Names? & antics from them

  • Ouzo, he was probably part German Shepard. Very quiet and loving a brown color
  • Martini, he was part daschund. He was given to us by a friend of Bud’s. He was a good dog and my love of daschunds grew stronger. I always had a fondest for them, both my grandmother and my 2 aunts had daschunds so I had been around them since I was young.
  • Sambuca, he was mostly Australian Shepard. The gentlest dog I ever met. Most Beautiful dog we ever had. He was very protective of me.

Save a Dog, Save Me

  • Tequila, He was given to us by a friend, our friend saw him threw out a persons car window. He knew we would be a good place to check to see if we would take him. Tequila ended up being my Guardian Angel, Bud woke up one night hearing him barking. Bud found me in the bathroom on the floor. I had a stroke. Tequila truly did save me if I hadn’t made it to the hospital on time for brain surgery.
  • Natasha, She looked like a big ole bear. She was part lab and probably Chow. At one time she weighed 95#, not exactly a lap dog. However at times she thought she was. It was quite a site when I walked her & Tequila together.

Love IT-3 Dachshunds

Love it 3 Dachshunds
  • Penny , she was a very sweet little daschund that got cancer. At first they had to remove her leg, really she got around pretty good on 3 legs, But it was tough playing with her brothers. After treatment she was in remission for awhile, but then it came back. It was so sad. She was such a sweet little dog.
  • Punkin, Penny’s brother. Punkin had attitude, but I loved him. It was also tough on him when he lost his sister. Thank goodness he had his brother to make it through. But he was a nervous dog to start with. It was really hard on him when I had to move. I felt so bad for him.
  • Bandit, my little man a dachshund we got as a pup. He was another that that really protected me. It will be a really long time before I ever get over losing him.

Well is everybody drunk now? It was fun & they were cute names and they seem to fit them.

Feral cats

I didn’t tell you about the the cats without booze names.

After Bud passed away I met someone who also loves pets. He also loves dogs and cats. A few years back he brought me a cat a found , which was a pretty young cat and was a feral cat. I named him Turbo. He was always running wildly around the house & I thought Turbo fit him. A year later the same friend shows up with some feral kittens that were about to die. Thank they were old enough to eat, so we could get some food into them so they wouldn’t die. They obviously must have come from the same mama as Turbo because they looked identical.

One Big Family

So there I am I now have 3 more cats, total of 4 cats and 3 dogs. When my friend comes over he has his dogs that are 4 Belgium Shepherds. I guess we both Love Pets, and they all get along. I decide I want to give all the cats a name that starts with T, because I have been calling one of them Twerp. So between the 2 of us we come up with Twitt & Teger. As they get older I put different colored collars on them so we can tell them apart. They are identical.

I have to sell the house

I can’t keep all these pets, because I’m going to have to move into an apartment. Decided I would keep the the Doxies, at that time there were 2. I had a gal who wanted 2 cats (that I ended up being friends with) and another couple who wanted the other 2. I felt very sad losing my 4 T’s. There was no doubt in my mind that the 2 were ok. . Had told him if anything ever happened, I wanted them back. I was really worried about Twerp, because I wasn’t sure if she would do ok with their children. I asked about her. He said he gave her away to to a coworker that torked me off. I really wanted her back.

Things get better

One day, I get a call from a Cat Rescue, they have my cat. They have Twerp! Twerp is now home with me again and we are very happy together. I lost the phone # to the people that had her when my phone went beserk or I’d call and get my other cat back-Turbo.
