Computer Life in 1968

History of what computers life in 1968 looked like.

My Computer Life In 1968, overview.

My computer life in 1956, this is for real. This is how I started of into Technology and became a successful IT Manager. Young people reading this it sound like computer fantasy. I was look out at myself as being as lucky. I was at the right time at the right time. There was fun and successful life with computer. Even though I have a background with computers they can be very frustrating. I am still very happy that I had the opportunity to have all of the exposure of computers over my life.

Dumb luck beginnings

It doesn’t sound like dumb luck. I wasn’t doing very well in college. One of my girlfriends went to seattle to a Business School. I couldn’t see myself in business. There was a 2nd school there also, it was called Automation Institute. I understood it was something about computers. I thought that sounded more interesting. My parents agreed. I packed my bags and drove to Seattle that I had never been before. (The Smith Tower was the tallest building in Seattle when I arrived). I moved in with 3 other gals. We all lived together for quite awhile.

Maybe it’s time for your find your Dumb Luck

There are some great jobs out there waiting for you. My favorite one is the Community I work with. I think it was another dumb luck. This community provides so many benefits:

  • Start your own business
  • Your hours are made by you, do you part time / full time what works for you
  • No rules to worry about, enforced by job
  • You’ll never be alone in this business
  • Everyone wants everyone to sucess

Training for Computer Life in 1968

The school was related downtown Seattle. I lived on Capitol Hill. Bus stopped very close to the apartment. Of you ever been to Seattle you would find out that it is very hilly. Not exactly a walking city. However I did make it a few times. Definitely back in my much younger days.

  • Bulding your own business while working with others
  • Setting your own hours
  • No longer the rules that are demanded when working in a regular job
  • Come join us, we’re working together for all of us to be successful

After completion it was little hard to get a job. If I applied as a Programmer they wanted experience. I did settle to part time jobs as a Keypunch Operator. while I was waiting for a full time job.

Begin My Computer Life in 1968

My first full time job was at Harborview Hospital, but still not a programmer/ Harborview Hospital is sold to and the University of Washington Hospitals.. Then we began doing the work with both hospitals. My beginning computers were a large difference comparison to what we see today. I am going to explain to you what my computer (technology) looked like. A history of computers to many of you. I started with larger floor model computers that didn’t make many brains. start

Keypunch and verifying machines Cards

  • programmer writes a program
  • program punched into cards
  • Program cards loaded to computer memory
  • All data punched into card
  • All cards are verified for accuracy by a 2nd keypunch operator
  • All Data cards loaded into computer storage

Sorter Machine

Cars need to be in order for programs

Big sorters used to complete that function

Card handling is a very long tedious manual.

The volume of cards was very large, because we were working with 2 Hospitals.

Collator machine

Collator merged two sets of cards together if need,

Program the collator by wires on a board.

My first time as a computer operator life in 1968

Load the cards into the computer

I know this is probably boring, but it shows how we got to where we are. These machines become the 2nd step of my computer career. Now what about the computer (IBM 1400 series). There are big long shutes on the computer that allowed you to load a large stack of cards (Think about it we are loading the invoices for every patient in each hospital.

Disk Drives/Storage

This particular computer had 4 drive drives. Disks were removable from each drive.

Printer

Print invoices after completed program. .

The printer, was very fast; however this can take hours. How long you ask? it could take 3 shifts – 8hours each.

Be Safe-Back up the Data

Back up the disks are created and copied it all onto tape (this will take another shift).

Precise handling of handling of labeling and storage rotation of all Disk and Tapes. available.

I Loved working as a computer operator, it was really fun
